Real Cost of DNA Sequencing

Cost for consumables is a matter of debate, but equipment, overhead, validation, management and the IT department all need to be covered. Information borrowed from the following:

http://www.politigenomics.com/2010/06/the-cost-of-doing-sequencing.html

Consumables:.................................$1,000.00 to $10,000 depending on company
Depreciation: .................................$2,500.00
Sample/Library Prep: ..................$2,210.00
IT Personnel:..................................$1,500.00
Computer Disk Space.....................$500.00
Computing time:.............................$100.00
Overhead (50% )............................$7,500.00
Aligning Reads................................$100.00
Merging BAM Files........................$5.00
Annotation (SNPs, SVs +).............$50.00
Disk Space........................................$1,000.00
Pipline Automation.........................$480.00
Validation:........................................$2,000.00
Management....................................$400.00
IT Overhead....................................$2,300.00

Funny the hard drive space alone is $500.00! I love DNA sequencing, it's so very important to do. But until computing and sample preparation costs come down, I don't see it being used for standard everyday diagnostics.
